At a few steps from your accommodation the diving centers will bring you in " under water safari ".
Play Robinson Crusoe on the dazzling white-sand beaches of Rangiroa, the largest island in a string of 240 unspoiled coral atolls that make up the Tuamotu archipelago, just an hour’s flight from Papeete, the capital of Tahiti. Here you can experience turquoise lagoons and white sandy beaches that are among the best in the South Pacific. Often rising no higher that a metre above the surface, these sandy coral atolls encircle the world's second-largest lagoon, an immense 68km-long by 25km-wide expanse of spectacularly clear water – perfect for swimming, snorkelling and diving.

This vast, turquoise lagoon is easily enjoyed from a range of idyllic beach resorts. Choose from the Kia Ora Sauvage, featuring five primitive, yet luxurious beach bungalows hidden beneath coconut palms on a tiny secluded motu; the Hotel Kia Ora, featuring overwater bungalows and fine dining; Les Relais de Josephine, where beach bungalows overlook Tiputa Pass; and the Novotel Rangiroa Lagoon Resort, located within a coconut plantation.

Highlights
Dip your toes into the gorgeous soft pink sand of Les Sables Rose (‘The pink sands’), one of French Polynesia's most beautiful beaches. Located on the eastern end of Rangiroa's lagoon and easily reached on a day excursion from any of Rangiroa's resorts, the beach offers great swimming and snorkelling and is the ideal spot for a secluded picnic. Or snorkel amid colourful fish and coral at the famous ‘Blue Lagoon’ of Toeo’o; spot schools of dolphins playing in Avatoru Pass and Tiputa Pass; watch thousands of seabirds nesting at Île aux Oiseaux (Bird Island); or cruise out to L'ile Aux Recifs (Reef Island), renowned for its fossilised razor-sharp coral formations that have been created by erosion – just remember to take reef shoes.

About Rangiroa
Less commercial than Tahiti, Rangiroa offers the quintessential South Pacific experience: languid days spent beneath an endless blue sky in a landscape of untamed scenic beauty. And for those wanting a more active vacation, Rangiroa also provides an immense playground for water sports and day trips to explore nearby motus. World famous for scuba diving, Rangiroa is probably the most famous shark diving destination in the South Pacific, with more than 10 species commonly sighted. Be sure to visit Avatora or Tiputa Village for an insight into traditional South Sea island life. In Tiputa you can also enjoy great views from Tiputa Point on a picnic.

Rangiroa Highlights
Dolphin watching Take a dolphin-watching cruise, easily arranged from any of Rangiroa's hotels and resorts. Or head to the public park at the western side of Tiputa Pass and watch playful dolphins frolicking and leaping high above the waves for free – best time is during the late afternoon.

Things to do
Scuba diving Head to Tiputa Pass, recognised as one of the world’s greatest shark dive locations. Watch a breathtaking array of eagle rays, tuna, various species of sharks including grey- and black-tipped sharks, and schools of dolphins that gather around the reef entrance to the lagoon. Watch sharks cruise by harmlessly – but close enough to make your heart beat just a little faster. Tiputa is also a good place to spot whales, between July and August. Probably the best time here is between December and March, when huge hammerhead sharks gather for the mating season. Tiputa is best for experienced divers as the current can be tricky; beginners should try inside the reef near Avatoru Pass and around the small islets sitting inside both passes. Typically, the water is so clear that visibility can reach 46m, and the temperature a constant 27°C.

Snorkelling Grab your mask and fins and simply walk out the front door of your hotel and jump in: anywhere on the atoll of Rangiroa is great for snorkelling. Discover a rich variety of marine life in Rangiroa's lagoon or head to L'Ile aux Recifs beach, Papiro Point and Mahuta. For a unique adventure experience, try drift-snorkelling the Pass of Tiputa, known locally as ‘shooting the pass’: with visibility up to 35m, you can safely watch sharks, dolphins, turtles and rays swimming beneath you as you literally drift with the incoming current through the pass.

Eco Enjoy a day trip across the lagoon to Rangiroa's nearby islets, explore the bird sanctuary or watch the dolphins frolicking at Tiputa Pass.
