Nicely described in trendy French Figaro Madame magazine as a perfect “lovers’ bower”, and listed in 2005 as one of the very finest residences in the Marrakech medina (old city), Riad Monceau is a true gem of Hispano-Moorish architecture, set in a quiet little side-street just a few steps away from the giddy bustle of Jemaa el Fna.
Dating from the 18th century, but refurbished throughout in 2002 and transformed into an elegant Marrakech boutique hotel, the ‘Monceau’ is a rare delight, combining the character and charm of an authentic luxury riad with all the creature comforts expected of modern design – a haven of peace just a stone’s throw from the city’s main tourist sights and shopping areas.
Owned by the French artist Isabelle Aubry, a number of whose major canvas embroideries are on exhibit within its walls, the riad offers also the warmth and conviviality of a private house subtly underscored with top-quality boutique hotel service.
You will be enchanted by the refreshing cool and dazzling luminosity of the Andalusian patio, paved with Carrara marble and boasting a fine swimming pool inlaid with traditional mosaic, by the spacious sun-drenched terraces with views of the Koutoubia mosque and the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas, and although by the warmth and softness of the traditional hammam-spa where the hands of Mouna – beautician and masseuse – work wonders.
This, of course, not to mention the culinary delights offered every night by the Riad Monceau boutique hotel’s on site Moroccan gourmet restaurant, the Mecca of Moroccan cuisine in a Marrakech medina luxury riad, which also hosts in the morning famous Moroccan cookery workshops that are as many opportunities to discover the subtle intricacies of generous and genuine Morocco.

5 1Nous avons encore deux jours pour profiter de ce délicieux séjour au Maroc. Après ça, direction Lyon ! Nous avons quitté le Riad Monceau avant hier pour passer les 2 derniers jours dans la Palmeraie et nous restons sous le charme de cet hôtel situé dans la vieille ville. Lieu somptueux, accueil des plus charmants et surtout un emplacement en or ; l'hôtel est juste à côté de la place Jemaa El Fna ce qui est un énorme avantage au quotidien si vous voulez pouvoir aller et venir en toute tranquillité (la plupart des visites se font à pied ici). Le restaurant de l'hôtel est aussi à recommander ; c'est un des meilleurs restaurants marocains de la ville.

It is not fair to compare a guesthouse that charges €75 a night with a nearby property that charges double or triple that rate.
