CASA DE CANEDO

Overview

Casa de Canedo is a 17th century manor-house, hub of a 50 hectare (124 acres) agricultural and forestry estate. In its present form the house comprises the original 17th-century square-built building with an interior yard - where the residential area and services are located - and an adjoining chapel to which was added an 18th-century building - the so-called "Casas Novas" (New Houses) - thus extending the main building and circumscribing the front yard.

The house has six bedrooms with adjoining bathrooms and three suites (bedroom, bathroom and drawing-room). They are all comfortable, and self-contained with telephone, log fireplace and electric radiators and provide easy and direct access to the outside. Suites have television and can accommodate a third person on the sofa bed. Bathrooms are fully-equipped with bath tub, bidet and hairdryer.

A varied breakfast is served in the dinning room.
Lunches and dinners can be served to lodgers and their guests to a maximum of 18 people sitting at one time, but this meals must be previously ordered.
The diverse menu consists of traditional Portuguese cuisine, mainly dishes from the Minho province. Weather permitting, meals can be taken outdoors.

The house has various sitting-rooms, a lounge a chapel, a small library and a games room where one can play cards and snooker.
The old rustic kitchen with its spacious granite hearth and chimney is used as the dinning-room. The whole modernization project of the house is an attempt to combine, wherever possible, the values of local tradition with the requirements of modern comfort.

Situated in the heart of the Basto Region, famous for its natural beauty and for its celebrated “vinho verde” (green wines), Casa de Canedo is equidistant from Celorico de Basto, Mondim de Basto and Cabeceiras de Basto.

Nestled in a peaceful valley, the House stands against the background of the foothills of the Alvão and Marão Mountains, and the church of Senhora da Graça on the top of a hill on the other bank of River Tâmega. This is a transition area where bucolic Minho begins to harmoniously blend with austere Trás-os-Montes. Canedo is, therefore, an ideal place to explore the contrasting natural beauty spots and to discover the varied cultural and folklore heritage of this region.
